Need For Speed: Carbon

With the holidays upon my head, there’s practically nothing much for me to do besides supposedly going for bowling training more often, go to college and work and fulfil the 16 hours minimum quota, mandarin classes, and a whole bunch of tertangguhed work both at home and out of home..

BUT I’m lazy.

So practically i sit at home and find something to do at home. Most of it are not in the list of tertangguhed works. lazy arse-nal.

Of course i need to allocate some time to gaming. Just to name a few: Company of Heroes - completed and cheated, and the latest and most talked about Need For Speed: Carbon.

NFS:C is under quite alot of criticism mainly because of it’s gameplay and hardware problem.

For those who encountered the hardware problem which normally resulted to a BOSD. Those who got this problem and with the error “ATI3[something].dll” can be solved with a driver update. For desktop owners go to ATI’s website and download the latest driver for your graphics card. For laptop owners, head to your respective manufactorer’s site for same driver update. (dell laptops head to dell, acer to acer and so on.)
(BOSD = Blue Screen Of Death, usually happens when your computer crashes in a very very very very bad way. No help could be done to resolve this but to plug out the power and restart your system.)

Update: The affected is called ati3duag.dll.

(side note, wa.. ati now under amd.. ati.amd.com.. have a funny feeling to it.. haha..)

Oh btw, NFS is optimised for ATI cards.. not Nvidia ;)

Then there’s the game crashing and not returning/returning to desktop (and a few variations of it).. So far i can’t find any updates or fixes for this.. most probably EA will release a patch to fix this. it’s funny that they didn’t do beta testing to the game before selling it out..

Next, NFS drawing problem (drawing as in graphics..) those who autosculpt (explained later) their back bumper, you may no longer see the exhaust fire.. it seems its a common problem to all the NFS series.. nothing can be done about that.. only way to get around it is to use a aftermarket part.

Gameplay is said to be short but in actual fact, it is not. Only the career mode is short, but not the entire game.. Like NFS: Most Wanted, there’s the Challenge Series and Online Mode. The Online Mode is really enhanced to a point where you can find random racers around the world - with any serial keys. :P HOWEVER, I still can’t play online :( No idea why..

Then there’s the Reward Cards.. A reward card has 4 different requirements to be unlocked. When unlocked, you’ll gain access to some part or car to the game. Requirements ranges from money gain in career mode to drifting points in a drift race to # of police cars took down to reaching a specific speed at a speed trap race. Then got Online Related Reward Cards, which can only be unlocked by racing online..

Another new feature is the AutoSculpt. AutoSculpt allows you to customise your parts to your liking. Eg: you can sculpt your spoiler to be as big/wide/tall as you want.. Vinyls in Carbon is back to Underground2’s style. In MW you can only put ONE vinyl to your car, no overlapping. In U2 you can put as much as u want, overlapping.) Then you can put it ANYWHERE you like. Can move it around, rotate, resize and skew it (not screw it). You can even put your vinyl on the roof and the boot of the car!

This is my career car:

Base colour of the car is pearl red (shiny wan). Then a dual tone vinyl on the top half of the car (orange -> red). Then the bottom is a body dual tone vinyl (red -> orange). On the roof is my crew logo and another sticker which is not visible in this angle, and on the boot a Revo sticker. :)

If you noticed, you can now turn cars upside down :P NFS:Most Wanted cannot.

Here’s the thing i didnt like it the vinyl system. IT TAKES SO LONG TO MOVE A VINYL FROM ONE PLACE TO ANOTHER!! And that includes rotating and resizing it as well. Mouse is practically useless for this as well. Also, i don’t know why we STILL need to use the mouse to change colours/platlets.. so mahfan.. they should let us use keys like pg up/down to manuvour between different types of platletts (eg: from gloss platlett to pearlselant (how u spell that thing?))

Cars are divided into 3 groups, Tuners, Muscles, and Exotics. Pic is self explanatory:

Enough of features, now the career storyline: (Spoiler Alert!)

I’m lazy to type so I’ll copy-paste :P

Spoiler Start

Carbon continues the story where Most Wanted left off. For those just tuning in, Most Wanted ended with you recovering your stolen car and bailing out of the city of Rockport while the overzealous, anti-street-racing Sgt. Cross continued his pursuit. At the start of Carbon, you’re making your way to Palmont City when Cross, now a bounty hunter, catches up with you and totals your car during the chase. Before he can collect his bounty on you, though, your old friend Darius steps in and pays off Cross. You are then put to work, taking over the turf of the other rival street-racing crews in Palmont City. It seems that you’ve got a history in this town that predates the events in Most Wanted. And during the course of the game, you’ll learn more about that fateful night you skipped town. Different characters will give their takes on the night you supposedly ran off with a big red duffle bag full of cash. And by the end of the game, you’ll not only find out what really happened, but you’ll have taken over all of the street-racing territory in Palmont City.

Spoiler End

In Career Mode you’ll race as a team. You’ll start off with one crew member and later grow to a max of 3. There are 3 types of crew: blockers, drafters, and scouts. Blockers will run interference for you, spinning out opponents at your command. Drafters let you slipstream behind them, giving you some extra speed from the reduced drag, and from there you can pull aside and slingshot your way past them. Scouts have a knack for finding the many alternate routes and shortcuts that can be found in most races, and they have short neon tracers that follow them, making it easier for you to take advantage. (another copy-paste job)

There’s another thing about crew members.. Each crew member has a specific skill assigned to them.. and would you know it, there are 3 different types of skills (duh..) Fixer, mechanic, and fabricator. Fixer generally helps you gain more cash per race, fabricator allows u to autosculpt certain parts, and mechanic.. don’t really remember, coz it practically doesn’t give much of an impact.

Race Types: Drifting is back! and so is random car races in free roam.. Then there’s a new race called canyon racing. Those who watched Initial D before, it’s very similar to that with one exception you don’t see on Inital D, you can fall off the cliff. Firstly you’ll race as the chaser while ur opponent is in front of you. you’ll try to stay as close as u can to gain as much points u can get. If you passed your opponent for 10 seconds, you automatically win the race. If you knocked your opponent’s car, -5000 points. If you’re left behind for more than 100 meters for 10 seconds, you’ll lose the race. If you could only stay behind your opponent all the way to the end, then you’ll race again, this time in front and the rules are practically opposite from what i said earlier.

There are some tricks you could do when racing on the canyon (on the 2nd run),
First, make him bang you to get 5000 points.
2nd, make him bang you again for another 5000 points.
3rd, if he passes you, bang him more to get more points before the 10 seconds timer runs out.
4th, use handbrake for better effect.

NFS:Canyon removed drag races from this game.. So no more precision shifting. :(

Drifting is a little bit different from the one in U2 but supposedly not as hard as U1. Trick = acceleration. Here’s a video of a few drift races.

Of course drifitng is easy.. my kittens could even drift around the living room, what do you think?Ok, I have 2 tricks that might be useful for everyone who plays Carbon. This trick i’m pretty sure most of you might not know.. This only applies to police pursuits..

If you’re caught on a straight road with no other turns out while both ends are blocked off, try to stick ur car to a wall at a bend on the road. Like this:

Another trick applies for speed trap races with crew. More like a bug actually.. Firstly get either a Scout or a Drafter as your racing crew, then when the race starts, try to get infront of the pack ASAP! If you’re fast enough, try to take down ur crew make them come from the back of the pack. For scouts, they are summonned automatically at the start of the race, while drafters you need to press the crew member key/button when the crew meter is full..

The part where all of this come together is the bug. For some reason your crew member is able to catch up to you even tho they are at the back/last. and the only way to get infront is to drive fast. up to 340kmph. believe me, while i could only get an average of 200kmph for a speed trap race, my crew had 280+kmph, just by making them start last. :P

Boys and their games. Sigh.

Enough of babbling.. Time to sleep.

P.S: i finished career in 16-18 hours. but it’s a mistake after realising the importance those tiny races for reward cards…
