My Dell Inspiron 6400 Stolen
Yea, stolen as of 1PM today. While I’m not so devastated of the loss of my laptop, but the same can’t be said for the data inside.
Me and my classmates put our bags into the boot before we leave college. We head to Lucky Restaurant at Sri Petaling for lunch and we parked near the restaurant (just outside Kings Bakery). After lunch, we drove to a cendol store near by and parked where we could see the car. After cendol, we head back to college to drop me there. The next thing I found out, my laptop and another classmate’s is missing.
Now, the possible place where the laptops could be stolen was at the restaurant. However, we parked beside a busy road, so we thought the chance of getting stolen was pretty low. Also, I doubt there’s people going around looking for laptops there. So the possible origin started from college. Most probably someone was watching out for guys like us putting laptops in our car and followed us to our destination.
We lodged a police report and got the car photographed for the tampering. I told Hau Cheong to issue an alert to the students on Webspace, but so far it’s not been approved yet.
I guess I done whatever I could do already. So now, I doubt recovery of the laptop is possible, but if you do come across people selling laptops at cheap prices online or offline please to take note of my specs. Just incase you encounter them.
The specifications of my laptop are as follow (1 year old):

June 13th, 2007 at 11:23 pmI always thought that putting laptop in the boot is the safest.
Did you buy any insurance?
June 13th, 2007 at 11:23 pmIt’s never a good idea to leave notebooks or other expensive things in the car (even if it’s in the boot). Even though the chances of recovering it is slim, I wish you all the best in getting it back.
June 13th, 2007 at 11:25 pmSHIT! That sucks man!
MY friend taught me whenever want to put laptop in boot, remember to remove the battery – it’s like, with the battery inside, as if some ‘circuitry’ still working and whatever detection-tools the thieves use, would be able to detect the presence of a laptop.
I don’t believe 100% this theory though. The best thing is to carry it whereever you go. We have seen and heard too many stories about laptops being stolen from cars. Hiding it under seat, in the boot, will not be effective because they have detectors. Of course, if you are being watched then surely it will be gone too..
Good luck to you with whatever your next course of action may be….
June 14th, 2007 at 2:08 amHope you can find it, but it does seem like a longshot.
If you don’t, have you thought about the replacement yet? XPS or Latitude?
June 14th, 2007 at 9:39 amI think its your destiny to lost it, grab yourself a macbook man!
June 14th, 2007 at 9:40 amAdsense Ads are hinting. Maybe I should start up a donation like Zeo’s.
Zeo: It’s alright. Let them be. Everything happens for a reason. =)
DK: Well, it’s not 100% safe. Yes, I do have insurance but it’s under another policy.
TenthofMarch: I wish I could carry it around, but I’m having shoulder problems. I’m currently under rehab for my shoulder. But neitherless, that place was so crowded, i really didn’t expect it to happen there…
Narrowband: I’ve heard so many stories and different variations of the story. But I think my case is just another case of people targetting students and following us around.
Jason: Should be a xps. they don’t sell my model anymore. latitude, after configuring to the same specs, it costs 2k more. xps slightly cheaper, but still 5k.
I heard returning customers to Dell will get a discount. I’ll try and see how it goes la.
Hongkiat: mac? it’s specs not even near my old laptop lar.

June 14th, 2007 at 10:26 pmMickey: back2u, isn’t that for phones?
Friedbeef: something unexpected..
my bag (laptop and everything in it) was around 5kg.. I have a shoulder and back problem which doesn’t allow me to carry heavy things.. so that’s one of reasons it’s in the boot..
abbyc: xpss… sigh.. alot of other things to buy as well.
June 15th, 2007 at 2:00 amHey there, saw your post from Ping.sg. Sorry that you and your friend’s laptops have been stolen.
A customer of ours got her car windshield smashed and took out both her MacBk PRO laptop and her Nokia E65 when shopping at JB. It was found later at one of the shopping malls selling off her stuff at the store.
Both were detected when the 2nd hand retailer bought it from the thief and tested it to make sure they are working. Caught the retailer face in video and audio by the laptop and the location from the phone when he swapped SIM card.
BAK2u develops anti-theft softwares for mobilephones, PDA phones, Mac OS laptops & computer but we know of a partner that carries anti-theft software for Window OS laptops too. Contact me if you plan to get one, can pass you the contact.
