1957

Malaysia’s Year of Independence.

Here’s a thought, have you ever tried searching/Google-ling ‘1957’ before? I bet you haven’t.

But if you do, what do you see?

On Google we have the normal first few entries, Wikipedia’s entry of the year of 1957, followed by ‘1957 in music’. Same goes with Yahoo. (Click here for 1957@Google, 1957@Yahoo)

Now lets look for a content about Malaysia or Malaya.

Near the bottom of Google’s first search page we have Jeff Ooi’s post on Malaysia.

But there’s none for Yahoo.

Back to topic, is it SEO didn’t work for who posted, or was it I searching for the wrong keywords? On the other hand, does the lack of Malaysia related post of that year somehow show how much we’ve really accomplished in our 50th year?

Some say we’re moving backwards while the G says we are moving forward. If you really balance everything up, we are actually doing okay, if you compare with 3rd world countries.

Crimes are on the rise. Political parties fighting mindlessly and rioting. Corruption still the same. Transportation is clogged & hay wired. Telecommunication is monopolized. Economy has too much restrictions on foreign companies/investors. Racism & Poverty never goes away. Social divide among different mentalities. Health isn’t that good either, dirty environment.

Government intervention are obvious. Government services not up to par either. Government websites are worst. Are they too poor to pay for better systems or there is a system but it’s just not user friendly?

Culture? What is our culture? Define Malaysian Culture. Manglish?

Think. Where really are we since 1957? Does our current progress in the last 50 years sufficient, or could we have done more?

I’m a Malaysian, and proud to be one. But if asked whether am I content with our progress? I do at some aspects. We do have some first class services, but those are still plagued with third class mentality.

Time to change our third world mentality into a first world, people. Who am I kidding with all these third world mentality still going around?

I end my post with a video from Hans Rosling. Debunking third-world myths with the best stats you’ve ever seen. Watch and you’ll be amazed with what he has to present.

BTW, you should try searching for 1957 in Lelong.com.my as well. A lot of collector’s items up for grab.
