Dell XPS M1210

Sorry for the very long delay. Hey, good stuff must take it’s time to show right? LoL.

Was held up by a few things lately, including ICCG site, my new laptop, recovery of my previous data and other tiny things. Streamyx and the wireless service at college is also being a bitch lately.

Oh, baby XPS got infected with a virus/Trojan last night. Busy looking for *ehem*. It’s up to your imagination to what that *ehem* is. Now in the process of backup (backup files from a 1 week old laptop? >.<” ) because I’ll have to format it after 24 hours of trying to recover the system. It’s 80% clean, but there’s some permanent errors left by the virus.

Anyways, enough of the crap. All you want to see is the new laptop.

Of course, all after the jump.

I was getting ready for college when dad called me to come down and get the package. It was about 10AM and class was at 10.30AM. Oh, 40 minutes drive to college.

Excited, this is what I received.

And this is what I’m greeted with

While carrying it out, I gotta tell you, it’s quite light compared to the 3kg Inspiron 6400. This is nearly 2kg! I wouldn’t mind even hugging it to sleep!

And the moment you’ve been waiting for!

My new baby Dell XPS:

I love the finishing of that panel, and I think if I add a carbon fiber sticker to the part where it says XPS, it will look even nicer! :D

This is how it looks on the inside. It’s a 12.1″ Wide Screen XGA display with TrueLife. Max resolution is 1280×800 pixels.

First boot

Here’s a side by side comparison of my old and new laptop on the laptop cooler. Notice the extra space at the sides of the new laptop.

Now I feel it’s an overkill to have such a big laptop cooler for such a small laptop.

This is how it looks in the dark

It looks uber nice in the dark. Zen. LoL. Wait till I plug in all my other accessories with lights on it.

Okay, my first few thoughts about the system.

Firstly, the sound sucks. The inbuilt speakers has it own mood. I don’t know why, but if I increase the volume to the max, the sound cracks and so bad. and that sometimes. The sound doesn’t always crack. Sometimes it sounds flat. Just don’t know why. There isn’t any bass as well. Best listen through ear/headphones.

Also the optional upgrade to the SoundBlaster Audigy Advanced HD is just a gimmick. It’s only a software upgrade. Mine, without the upgrade, still have the basic SoundBlaster application installed, but it has an extra option to upgrade to the SoundBlaster Audigy Advanced HD software.

Still on sound, I like the option that it supports a 5.1 speaker system. It has 2 output jacks, and 1 input jack at the front of the laptop, just below the media controls. One thing bad is that my laptop cooler blocks me from using the front jacks. It’s in the way.

The 4 USB slots are conveniently located at both sides of the laptop, 2 on each sides. When you plug your devices in, it looks like the laptop has tiny wings.

The wireless device on/off switch. To be honest, I find it not too intelligent. I can choose what the switch can control (bluetooth, wifi, wwan). But the bad thing about it is that when I turn the switch to OFF, ALL the devices set with it, will turn off together. So lets say I want to turn off my Bluetooth, I have to turn off my WiFi as well. Not very bright design to me. By right I should be able to decide which component I would like to turn off. Turning off unused components can save my battery time.

WWAN. There’s a slot behind the battery slot where you can slot in your SIM card. The user manual isn’t really helpful when I was looking for the reason why I can put in my SIM card into the system. After some research, it’s used for mobile broadband, but you’ll need to buy an extra module for it, WWAN, wireless WAN. I contacted Dell sales and enquired about it, but they told me that currently, it’s not available to Malaysia yet. But in the future it will, looking at Maxis with their mobile 3G broadband plans.

That’s it. While flipping through the user manual, I came across this picture from Dell:

Overall I’m happy with my purchase. Here is an in-depth review of the Dell XPS M1210 from NotebookReview.com. Worth reading if you’re interested in getting one. Also, there’s the latest Dell XPS M1330, 13.3 inch laptop. It’s currently open for pre-orders, and expected delivery is about 1–2 months time. It launches 3 days after I received my my XPS!!! Grr..

Oh yea, I finally arrived at college about 11.20AM. :P

Nicee! Ya can’t expect much from laptop speakers. Have u listened to Toshiba laptop’s Hamann Kardon speakers? Even better than some of the Desktop audio system. Kao lat.

Lol @ all the gripes u mentioned. Not very bright to off all modules indeed. And WWAN is useless, for now. But thinking of it as forward compatibility helps in ‘justifying’ our purchase, no matter how useless they are even after the feature can be used.

Ooze: the sim card is used for mobile broadband. you’ll need to get an optional WWAN card for that. you’ll also need to get a 3G enabled sim card.

i hope i got all your questions right, because i also was wondering about it. did my research and that’s what i found out.
